How Google Introduces Fast Internet in Chrome - In order to speed up access to the Internet, Google's WebP image format support updating the beta version of the Chrome browser. This format promises speed and higher efficiency than other types of formats.
WebP itself is a new image format from Google that can generate lossless and lossy compression. The size of the resulting file can be 34 percent smaller than JPEG.
As reported by CNET, Google says that WebP could eventually replace JPEG, GIF, and PNG are widely used today.
Such as JPEG, WebP can shrink the size of the file with lossy compression, but this format is also able to present a transparent image without background (alpha transparency) like PNG.
Google has been using WebP to replace the image in PNG format on the site Google Play. This step is called managed to cut the file size by a third.
The Internet giant also plans to use WebP to display thumbnail images on the video sharing site YouTube.
"All uses (WebP) among Google has resulted in savings of tens of terabytes of data transfer a day ... For users, the benefit is a shorter loading pages and use less data quota," wrote product manager WebP Husain Bengali in a blog post Sunday ago.
However, not all parties support the use WebP. Mozilla, for example, it is yet to include support for WebP in his Firefox browser.
